What the Romans Knew About Trading Discipline
Rules Without Consequences Are Just Suggestions. The Romans Figured That Out 2,000 Years Ago.

Decimation… such a fantastic word. But did you know where it comes from?
Here’s the story….
When a Roman legion broke ranks, showed cowardice, or mutinied, the punishment was decimation… literally “removal of a tenth.”
The unit was split into groups of ten.
Each group drew lots. The unlucky one was beaten to death by the other nine. With clubs by his own mates…![]()

So why did they do this? And more importantly, what’s it got to do with trading?
DECIMATION
One word. Discipline.
The Roman army was the most dominant military force in history. They weren’t the biggest. Nor did they have the best weapons. But they were the most disciplined.
They enforced the rules brutally because they knew that discipline was the difference between success and failure….
Now I’m not suggesting you decimate your trading pod for rule breaking, or club yourself every time you FOMO into a trade… ![]()

But if you’ve been going around in circles with rule-breaking… maybe there should be some consequences.
A forced break the next day. Size cut in half for the rest of the week.
And yeah… I’ve even seen traders operate a fining system. Pay £100 to the political party or football team you despise the most…
It sounds stupid. But it works. Nothing fixes a bad habit faster than making it expensive.
The point is this… discipline in trading means something different to each of us. But the principle is the same one the Romans figured out 2,000 years ago.
Rules without consequences are just suggestions. And suggestions don’t build empires.
Something to think about today.
