Steven Perkins - The Drunk Oil Trader Who Moved the Market (and Lost £10 Million)

How Steven Perkins’ late-night trading binge became one of the wildest stories in financial markets.

Alright, something a bit light-hearted today…

The story of the drunk oil trader who bought $500mln worth of crude while p*ssed.

(It actually reminds me of an old mate who’d just started trading. Few too many beers one evening, came home, fired up his broker, and blew his account trading the Nikkei in the early hours… 🙈)

Fool.

STEVEN PERKINS

Steven Perkins was an oil trader at PVM Oil Futures. In June 2009, after a boozy golf trip, he came home and decided to punt on Brent Crude futures.

He traded roughly 7 million barrels of oil, spiking Brent by over $1.50 a barrel. His last trade went through at 3:41 am.

His result?

-£10,000,000.

Oops.

The FSA fined him £73k and in their report wrote:

“Mr. Perkins poses an extreme risk to the market when drunk.” 😁

Don’t we all, don’t we all…

Lesson?
Don’t drink and trade!
